THOUGH Nigeria is producing food in large quantity, its citizens may continue to wallow in hunger unless certain steps are taken by governments, Bauchi State governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has said.
Mallam Yuguda spoke when he visited the Tribune House, headquarters of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, to condole with the management and staff of the organisation, over the death of their publisher, Chief Oluwole Awolowo.
The governor expressed concern over the declining fortunes of the people of Nigeria, charging the youth particularly, to rise up to the occasion.
Governor Yuguda, who was in the Tribune House in company with his Chief of Staff, Government House, Alhaji Yusuf Musa Gumli; his Special Assistant, Mallam Sanusi Mohammed and his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Ishola Michael, however, noted that despite all the challenges, some states were performing.
“But some states are working. My coming to this state this time, I am overwhelmed. Ibadan is as clean as Lagos. During the flood disaster time, I went to that office (Governor’s Office). He (Governor Abiola Ajimobi) just came in then. But when I came to that office as Aviation Minister during the tenure of Ladoja (Rashidi) and Alao-Akala (Adebayo), it was still the colonial buildings that were there. But today, the environment is different. The serenity and ambience of the Governor’s Office would make you feel happy.
Why I visited the Awolowo family – Yuguda
He described his ljourney to the Awolowo family in Ikenne, Ogun State, to pay a condolence visit as a mark of fulfilling his promise, following the support the family and the entire Tribune family gave him during the 2007 election.
“The old woman (Chief Mrs HID Awolowo) was very passionate about me because when I won my election in 2007, she requested that the entire management of the Tribune newspaper come to Bauchi then. So, as a mark of appreciation, I made a return visit to the newspaper and to the old woman to condole with her on the death of her son.”
The Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Tribune titles, Mr Edward Dickson, thanked the governor for showing “much love to the Awolowo family.”
He approved new wage for workers on sick bed —Tribune MD
Dickson, while receiving a three-man delegation of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), also said the late publisher of the Tribune titles approved the payment of the national minimum wage for staffers of the media house on his sick bed.
The NGE team was led by the president, Mr Femi Adesina, accompanied by Mr Isaac Ighure, secretary of the guild and Mrs Funke Egbemode, the social/publicity secretary.
Others pay condolences
Niger State governor, Dr Mua’zu Babangida Aliyu, described the late Oluwole Awolowo as “a great patriot and rare gem.”
Dduring a condolence visit to Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo, at Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, on Thursday, the governor, represented by the state Commissioner for Information and Integration, Professor Muhammed Kuta Yahaya, in company with the former Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Professor Wale Are Olaitan, said the country would miss the late Oluwole, who he described as symbol of unity.
Chief Sunday Adegeye (aka King Sunny Ade), also prayed for the repose of his soul.
“That Almighty God will bless his soul. He has been upholding Mama and other members of the family. It is painful that he left behind his mother. May his soul rest in perfect peace. He was a good friend, brother and a good man,” he wrote in the condolence register.
Former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, said, “May the Lord receive Wole into his bossom. May perpetual light shine upon him. May the Lord comfort Mama and the Awolowo family.”
Also, former minister of Mines and Steel Development, Alhaji Sarafadeen Tunji Ishola, said Ogun State had lost an illustrious son.
The Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi, represented by Chief Olusola Ogunleye, said the people of Owo Kingdom commiseratedwith the family of Papa Awolowo on the demise of Chief Oluwole Awolowo.
A former Editor-In-Chief of the ANN Plc, Mr Folu Olamiti, said the deceased had gallantly fought a good fight.
For Mr Daniel Richard, the death was a great loss.
